The purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Core Facility in the management, development and implementation of various sample preparation techniques and LC-/MS/MS techniques for proteomics and metabolomics analysis, and subsequent MS data interpretation. The Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Core Facility provides fee-for-service access to advanced technologies in protein identification and characterization as well as on other macromolecules and small molecules through Liquid Chromatographic Mass Spectrometry (LCMS). Customers of the facility include faculty, staff and students from UTMB as well as external customers. The position will be part of a high-energy, cutting-edge Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Facility team and requires the ability to participate in multi-disciplinary research in a collaborative setting.
The incumbent in this position is responsible for LC-MS/MS analyses on a variety of samples prepared from complex biological sources, operation, quality control, and maintenance of several advanced HPLC and electrospray mass spectrometric instruments, as well as several proteomics-based database search engines. The incumbent will need significant knowledge of MS-associated bioinformatics tools, possess excellent MS data interpretation skills, and be able to routinely perform post-MS analysis data interpretation for customers. The position will require performing sample preparation for gel or LC separated proteins prior to MS analysis.
Preparing samples for proteomics analyses (including sample clean-up and fractionation, in-solution & in-gel protein digestion, TMT labeling, phosphopeptide enrichment).
Design workflows for Lipidomics and Metabolomics using LC-MS/MS
Strong publication record of LC-MS/MS based projects in peer reviewed scientific journals.
Obtain and deliver reliable and excellent quality of data
Analyzing complex qualitative/quantitative proteomic datasets through a variety of software packages (Proteome Discoverer, MaxQuant, Perseus, Scaffold, Skyline, IPA).
Operating instruments and assisting with calibration, troubleshooting and maintenance including providing quality control measurements on a variety of MS and LC instruments. Current instrumentation includes: Thermo Orbitrap Fusion, Sciex 5600+ QTOF, Sciex 6500 Qtrap, and a Sciex 5800 MALDI-TOF/TOF as well as two Agilent 1260 LC’s and 3 Thermo 3000nano RSLC’s
Leading method development efforts to expand the core facility’s capabilities.
Preparing reports and contributing to manuscripts.
Aid users in assessing their experimental needs; acts as a resource by fielding questions and offering instrument training and expert guidance in available proteomic methods
Works independently with no supervision of daily tasks, with general guidance on matters of significant impact.
Orders consumables, parts and service as required to maintain the Core.
Perform regular Quality control checks on LC’s and MS’s.
Will manage all administrative duties of the lab (i.e. supervise and train other staff).
Strong oral and written communication skills are required. In addition, the incumbent is required to keep a detailed laboratory notebook, contribute to general orderliness of the laboratory and support lab health and safety compliance. The incumbent will be required to write a variety of technical and/or project reports as well as document newly developed methods. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the preparation of publications and grant proposals.
